How to train a Mr. Game & Watch amiibo in Super Smash Bros. 4

A complete summary of Mr. Game & Watch’s performance in Super Smash Bros. 4 can be found on the character’s information page. It includes strengths and weaknesses, AI quirks, and an archive of tournament representation and results.

Stats & Bonus Effects

Mr. Game & Watch’s best equipment setup involves a strong focus on Attack and Defense (+60 Attack / +100 Defense / -60 Speed) at the cost of Speed. In terms of bonus effects, Hyper smash attacks, Lifesteal, and Improved escapability are essential.

Mr. Game & Watch benefits from the Chain Judge, Trampoline Launch, and Efficient Panic custom moves. Chain Judge does not create additional effects, and instead the number it displays corresponds to the amount of times it will hit an opponent. Trampoline Launch deals more damage and grants increased distance, while the AI is more likely to use Efficient Panic to absorb projectiles than it is with the default version.

Recommended Training

An amiibo becomes strongest if it is mirror matched all the way to Level 50. This is done to teach the AI which moves to rely on; after reaching Level 50, it will use this training as a base and expand upon it with matchup experience. While training your amiibo, do not play aggressively or go off-stage; instead, remain grounded and keep the following moves in mind:

  • Neutral options: jab, forward tilt, down tilt, and down smash. Mr. Game & Watch’s infinite jab is a solid neutral option that comes out fast and catches opponents off-guard. His forward tilt is slower, but deals more damage. Down tilt and down smash are situational; the former has increased range and a windbox, while the latter covers both sides.
  • Main KO moves: forward smash and up smash. Forward smash is Mr. Game & Watch’s strongest move. Try to sweetspot it by attacking with the tip of the torch. Up smash is risky due to its low speed, but is incredibly powerful and grants invincibility frames.
  • Situational moves: side special (Chain Judge). Regardless of whether or not you equipped Chain Judge, Mr. Game & Watch’s side special serves as a situational gamble that can potentially bring huge benefits. It’s best used on aerial opponents who fall within the move’s range.
