Super Smash Bros. Brawl – Unlockables Guide

Super Smash Bros. Brawl was released for the Nintendo Wii on January 31st, 2008: over ten years ago. It’s hard to believe a game I grew up with is over a decade old. Regardless, there are loads of unlockables in Super Smash Bros. Brawl — perhaps even too many to count. But we’re going to try!

Characters

All of Super Smash Bros. Brawl’s unlockable characters can be obtained by completing the Subspace Emissary mode. However, they can also be obtained by fulfilling alternative criteria:

  • Ness is unlocked by reflecting ten projectiles. Alternatively, you can play 5 versus matches.
  • Marth is unlocked by completing Classic Mode. Alternatively, you can play 10 versus matches.
  • Luigi is unlocked by completing Classic Mode without using any continues. Alternatively, you can play 22 versus matches.
  • Falco is unlocked by completing 100-Man Brawl. Alternatively, you can play 50 versus matches.
  • Captain Falcon is unlocked by completing Classic Mode on Normal difficulty within 12 minutes. Alternatively, you can play 70 versus matches.
  • Lucario is unlocked by completing all Target Smash difficulties with a single character. Alternatively, you can play 100 versus matches.
  • Snake is unlocked by playing 15 versus matches on Shadow Moses Island. Alternatively, you can play 130 versus matches.
  • R.O.B. is unlocked by obtaining 250 different trophies. Alternatively, you can play 160 versus matches.
  • Ganondorf is unlocked by completing Classic Mode as Link or Zelda on Hard difficulty. Alternatively, you can play 200 versus matches.
  • Mr. Game & Watch is unlocked by completing Target Smash with at least 30 different characters. Alternatively, you can play 250 versus matches.
  • Sonic is unlocked by completing Classic Mode with at least 10 different characters and playing at least 10 hours of versus matches. Alternatively, you can play 300 versus matches.
  • Jigglypuff is unlocked by completing the Subspace Emissary and then winning at least 20 Event Matches. Alternatively, you can play 350 versus matches.
  • Toon Link is unlocked by completing Classic Mode after completing the Subspace Emissary. Alternatively, you can play 400 versus matches.
  • Wolf is unlocked by completing Boss Battles Mode as Fox or Falco. Alternatively, you can play 450 versus matches.

Stages

Following the tradition set by its predecessor, Super Smash Bros. Brawl features many unlockable stages. Highlights include 75m and Hanenbow, which are so chaotic they’re borderline unplayable. Such is the nature of Smash, though, so get to work!

  • 75m is unlocked by playing as Donkey Kong 20 times in versus matches.
  • Big Blue is unlocked by playing as Captain Falcon 10 times in versus matches.
  • Flat Zone 2 is unlocked alongside Mr. Game & Watch.
  • Green Greens is unlocked by playing as Kirby 20 times in versus matches.
  • Green Hill Zone is unlocked alongside Sonic.
  • Hanenbow is unlocked by clearing Event Match #28: Flower Blooms in the Echoes.
  • Jungle Japes is unlocked by playing on Melee stages 10 times in versus mode.
  • Luigi’s Mansion is unlocked by playing as Luigi 3 times in versus matches.
  • Mario Bros. is unlocked by clearing Event Match #19: Wario Bros.
  • Pirate Ship is unlocked alongside Toon Link.
  • Pokémon Stadium is unlocked by playing on the Pokémon Stadium 2 stage 10 times.
  • Spear Pillar is unlocked by clearing Event Match #25: The Aura Is With Me.

Features

In Super Smash Bros., it was the item switch. In Melee, it was the score display. And now, in Brawl, it’s the random stage switch. This one’s a bit more reasonable, though, because it requires you to unlock every stage in the game.

  • All-Star Mode is obtained by unlocking every character.
  • Boss Battles Mode is unlocked by completing both Classic Mode and the Subspace Emissary.
  • The Random Stage Switch is obtained by unlocking all stages.
  • More Rules are unlocked by getting 200 KOs in Versus matches.
  • Stage Builder Edit Parts A are unlocked by playing 10 versus matches on custom stages.
  • Stage Builder Edit Parts B are unlocked by creating 5 custom stages.
  • Stage Builder Edit Parts C are unlocked by creating 15 custom stages.
