Steve is one of the more complicated Figure Players to train in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Between the ability to mine, craft, and place blocks, training this character might sound intimidating. Luckily, you don’t even have to use any of these moves during the matches you play — which will make training a Steve FP a whole lot easier. Looking to equip your FP with a Spirit team? You’ve come to the right place! If you’d rather train your Steve amiibo without giving it Spirits, you’re welcome to skip ahead to the next section instead. To those of you new to amiibo training, we recommend reading our full Spirits guide. They’re far too complex to adequately explain here, so be sure to come back to this guide after reading that one! Without further ado, then, here are Steve’s best Spirit setups:
- Banned bonuses: As with most fighters, your best bet here is Armor Knight plus Trade-Off Ability ↑. Its incredible stat boosts are useful for any and every character, which includes Steve! Otherwise, something like Great Autoheal is a decent replacement.
- Tournament-legal bonuses: As we’ll soon discuss, Steve’s optimal moves are split across two categories: weapons and fire. With this in mind, Weapon Attack ↑ and Fire & Explosion Attack ↑. Interestingly enough, giving your Steve FP the latter will turn its up smash into a one-hit shield breaker. You could also use Air Defense ↑ or Move Speed ↑!
- Raid Boss bonuses: The bonus effects listed above – especially Fire & Explosion Attack ↑ for its shield-breaking properties – work well on a Raid Boss too. Move Speed ↑ tends to function better on Raid Bosses, as human players often have trouble keeping up with opponents with increased speed.
Please note that your FP must have an attack stat of 2100 or more to ensure that Fire & Explosion Attack ↑ results in a shield break. We recommend a balanced build (2100 / 2100). If you decide not to use that bonus, you can lean a bit more into defense instead (1800 / 2400). Make sure your FP’s Spirit-type is Neutral before you continue!
Steve is tricky to train. If you do too much mining and crafting, the FP will use its neutral specials way too often and leave itself vulnerable. This creates a problem: you, playing as Steve, need to have materials in order to craft the strongest possible weapons. But you can’t mine or else the FP will turn out wonky. To remedy this, don’t mine, craft, or even place blocks — just keep attacking with your default weapons until they break. Here are the specific moves you should prioritize:
- Up close, your best options are down tilt, forward smash, and down smash. Down tilt strikes directly ahead and hits multiple times, meaning it works great against shield-heavy opponents. Forward smash varies in speed and power depending on the sword Steve has equipped, while down smash covers both sides. Please note that these three moves are listed in descending order of priority!
- When your FP is launched above you – either because it jumps or falls from the respawn platform – you should smack it with up smash attacks. This is another multi-hit move, and it’s got great power to boot. You can also attack with up tilt in this case — use a mix of up smashes and consecutive up tilts.
- You’ll want to remain grounded whenever possible, with one exception: you’re allowed to go off-stage to edgeguard! Do so with a forward air or back air. You can also use the latter to land when you’re launched upward.
- Lastly, you can mix in a bit of Minecart from a distance. Don’t use this too often, though; it can get Steve punished.
Theoretically, a bit of mining might be okay, but for the best possible results you’ll want to keep it to an absolute minimum. Stay away from neutral attack, forward tilt, neutral air, and TNT, as these moves won’t bring your FP much benefit. For more information on amiibo training, check out our general guide!
Raid Boss Training
In terms of mining and crafting, Raid Boss Steve isn’t much different than his competitive variant: you’ll want to keep your usage of Mine / Craft to an absolute minimum. That being said, it’s okay to place blocks when training a Raid Boss! The AI sometimes makes funny formations with them, if you know what we mean. Here’s a full list of moves you should teach to your Raid Boss Steve, then:
- An optimal Raid Boss Steve uses a wide variety of ground moves. Up close, use up tilt, down tilt, and up smash (especially to punish landings). From a distance, mix in dash attack, Minecart, forward smash, and down smash. Steve’s AI uses all of these moves rather well, and they’re made even more powerful on a Raid Boss thanks to its Spirit team.
- In the air, your priorities are as follows: repeated up airs, block placement, forward air, and then back air. You don’t have to be intricate with your block positions; place them anywhere you like. At later levels, Steve’s AI will automatically determine the best spot to place a block.
- Finally, you can land with forward air or down air. Keep in mind that your FP will still learn to use these moves even if you use them while your tools are broken.
As with the competitive section, you’ll want to avoid using neutral attack, neutral air, and up specials (other than recovery).
