The term amiibo Buff refers to the automatic stat increase Figure Players receive in Super Smash Bros. 4 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It has been a point of controversy among casual trainers, who perceive these enhancements as unnatural and unfair to human players.
In Super Smash Bros. 4
At Level 50, amiibo are granted a 1.5x boost to their Attack and Defense stats regardless of whether or not they were fed equipment. Given that Smash 4’s AI is heavily defensive, it does not fare well against human opponents; as a result, these stat increases are essential to their play. Lowering a Figure Player’s Attack and Defense stats to -50 via equipment will offset these bonuses.
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
The amiibo buff has been significantly weakened in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, as Figure Players only receive a 1.25x boost to their Attack and Defense stats. Like Smash 4, the bonuses are applied even if the Figure Player has not inherited Spirits. Ultimate’s AI is highly aggressive, and does not necessarily need the amiibo buff to contend with human players. Lowering a Figure Player’s Attack and Defense to -400 via Spirits will offset these enhancements.
