The amiibo Buff refers to the automatic stat increase Figure Players receive in both Super Smash Bros. 4 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It has long been a point of controversy among casual trainers, who perceive these enhancements (which vary by game) as overpowered and unfair to human players.
General Information
In Super Smash Bros. 4, Figure Players receive an automatic 1.5x boost to their Attack and Defense stats. If the FP in question does not have equipment, this bonus is still applied; if the FP does have equipment, the bonus stacks with it. Lowering the FP’s Attack and Defense stats may help offset the amiibo buff, but is not recommended. FPs in this game already struggle to deal with multi-hit moves, super armor, and edgeguarding, so they are already rather easy to defeat even with the amiibo buff intact.
Possibly in response to the amiibo buff’s poor reception in Smash 4, its enhancements were noticeably weakened in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Figure Players only receive a 1.3x boost to their Attack and Defense stats, once again regardless of (and in addition to, if applicable) their Spirit setup. The amiibo buff can’t be canceled out with negative stat points in this game. Even if an FP’s stat appears to be extremely low, the game will not allow its amiibo buff to be fully counteracted.
