Pokémon Trainer is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (while Super Smash Bros. 4 features Charizard as a standalone playable character). The Super Smash Bros. series Charizard amiibo was released on May 29, 2015 as part of Wave 4. The Super Smash Bros. series Squirtle, Ivysaur, and Pokémon Trainer amiibo can also be used as Figure Players.
In Super Smash Bros. 4
Charizard is currently ranked in the A+ tier in Super Smash Bros. 4. Its attack power and durability are among the highest in the game, and these traits are bolstered by its excellent smash attacks (including a forward smash that renders it entirely intangible). Charizard’s jab is one of the best available, helping it to rack up damage in a pinch. Its special moves come in handy as well, with Dragon Rush (a custom move version of its side special) greatly aiding its recovery.
However, Charizard is held back by an array of flaws. The speed of its moves (bar neutral attack) is below average, meaning that its attacks must be timed and spaced perfectly. Its large frame makes it easy to hit and an optimal target for multi-hit moves such as Ness’s PK Fire. Charizard’s AI is also rather jumpy; it may also overuse its down smash and up special.
Overall, Charizard has achieved fantastic tournament results and representation. FarmingSim’s Charizard amiibo is one of the most successful of its kind; Cloud and Supernova are known to have trained one as well.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Charizard is a rather interesting case, as it is the only fighter from Super Smash Bros. 4 whose roster slot gained two additional characters. These additions (Squirtle and Ivysaur), however, tone down Charizard’s strengths; as a result, Pokémon Trainer in Ultimate is thought to be weaker than Charizard in 4. Charizard’s improvements include enhanced mobility, stronger smash attacks, and increased recovery potential. The character also benefits from Ivysaur’s long-ranged attacks and Razor Leaf projectile.
The inclusion of Squirtle, however, serves as a major detriment to Pokémon Trainer’s viability. Its attacks are weak, it struggles to KO, its range is short, and it is one of the lightest characters in the game. If Squirtle were its own character, it would be one of the worst in the game. Unfortunately, Pokémon Trainer’s AI insists on switching its Pokémon often, meaning there is no way to prevent it from switching into Squirtle.
Overall, Pokémon Trainer has received above average tournament results and representation. Latios’s Pokémon Trainer, Red, is one of the character’s strongest incarnations and has seen a great deal of success in the competitive metagame.
