Ryu is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. 4 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The Super Smash Bros. series Ryu amiibo was released alongside Roy on March 18, 2016.
In Super Smash Bros. 4
Ryu is a member of the B+ tier in Super Smash Bros. 4. Thanks to Ryu’s unique inputs, he has more moves than any other character; adding to this strength is his AI’s ability to actually use them. Ryu benefits from a wide variety of options, including projectiles, shield pressure, and powerful finishers.
Perhaps Ryu’s greatest weakness is his recovery. Tatsumaki Senpukyaku grants acceptable horizontal distance, but Shoryuken often falls short. Though AI does not go off-stage to gimp enemies, characters like Mario and King Dedede do shoot projectiles that could potentially intercept Ryu’s recovery. Ryu is also quite difficult to train due to his inputs, so the character was somewhat rare over Smash 4’s lifespan.
Overall, Ryu has accrued solid tournament results but slightly below-average representation. Supernova and Arklaine are thought to have the strongest Ryu amiibo in Smash 4, as they both found a great degree of success with the character.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Ryu received a combination of buffs and nerfs for his appearance in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Though he can now cancel his tilts and aerials into special moves, the AI cannot be taught to do this on purpose; Ryu’s projectile was also improved with additional speed and power.
Unfortunately, Ryu retains his weaknesses from his previous appearance. His vertical recovery still leaves something to be desired, and is now more vulnerable than ever due to the introduction of off-stage play. Additionally, Ryu struggles against fighters with high range — specifically Link — making him a risky tournament entry.
Overall, Ryu has accrued respectable tournament results and representation. MiDe currently has the strongest Ryu amiibo with Supernova trailing behind in second place. It is worth noting that Ryu is considered a full upgrade over Ken, whose AI prevents him from properly utilizing his moveset.
